Overview

College of Esports is a specialist further education provider. Like every FE setting, its teaching staff carry sustained pressure across a term, the kind that, left unseen, becomes absence, turnover, and the loss of good people. Rather than wait for the lagging signs, the college chose to get ahead of it.

Over a four-week pilot, the college ran EEmber’s weekly loop: a 60-second anonymous daily staff check-in feeding a weekly Burnout Risk Index, the driver behind it, a targeted action with a named owner, and a dated evidence trail mapped to the HSE Management Standards. The aim was not to measure strain. It was to act on it, and prove they had.

The challenge

The programme began the term in a Yellow-to-Orange mix: sustained pressure of the kind that turns into summer resignations if nothing changes. The college’s existing picture was lagging, it could see the symptoms after the fact, not the strain building in real time, and there was no dated record of what was being done about it.

Like most settings, the working assumption was that the pressure was workload. The signal showed otherwise.

The loop they ran

Each week the check-in named the dominant driver, and the college ran a targeted, low-friction action with a named owner. Every action was logged with the dated proof it ran.

The outcome

  • Average risk fell 59%, from 37.9 (Yellow) to 15.4 (Green).
  • Peak risk fell 65%, from 53.0 (Orange) to 18.5 (Green).
  • The band mix moved from a Yellow and Orange spread to 100% Green in the final week.
  • The driver was named and acted on (control and change), not assumed (workload), so the action fit the cause.
  • A complete, dated evidence trail of what was seen and what was done, mapped to the HSE Management Standards.
